Short Course Description

This course on the El Nino climate phenomena will introduce to the student the the science of the El Nino. We start by defining the phenomenon of the El Nino and the Southern Oscillation. We will look at historical records to understand the variability of the El Nino on historical time scales. We then delve into the physical mechanisms of the phenomenon to understand the driving forces behind this climatic anomaly. We will then discuss the global impacts of ENSO on weather patterns, and we finish with some computer modeling and simulations, while looking at the predictions of El Nino for the coming year. The goal of the course is to give the student a deep understanding of the ENSO climate phenomena, both scientific and socio-economically.
