Short Course Description
0553-7000-01 Practical Ethics for STEM students;
This is an interdisciplinary course on leadership, decision making, and the application of
ethics to real world problems. TAU engineering students will be involved after graduation
in Academy, Government and especially in the Hi-Tech industry. They will interact in a
global and diverse world. The goal of this course is to give students a deep and practical
decisions making tools, and in particular how to approach difficult decisions where there
is no clearly right answer.
There are two parts in this course.
In the first part we cover important concepts in the practical application of ethics, in
decision making, and in understanding the scenario at hand.
In the second part, we take a deep look at major practical ethical issues resulting from
the newfound capabilities made possible by emerging technologies. The power of
emerging technologies to modify our world will only increase and become more pressing
in coming years. Autonomous machines, Artificial Intelligence and gene editing are some
examples of major ones.
The first part is a combination of class meetings, online material, readings and asynchronous
discussions. In the second part, the class is divided into several small group.
They will set time and location to discuss a major subject that will be defined during the
first part of the course. This subject will change each time the course will be offered.
The course is open to all faculty of Engineering, Exact sciences, Life sciences and other
who are interested in this topic.
