Short Course Description
This seminar explores Jewish life in medieval Regensburg and Bavaria from the tenth to the sixteenth century. Drawing on diverse primary sources, including illuminated manuscripts, Hebrew texts, legal documents, German law books, and archaeological evidence, students will examine how Jews participated in urban life while maintaining distinct communal institutions and identities during periods of political and social upheaval. The seminar also considers the divide between European local historiography and Jewish history and develops skills in the critical analysis and comparison of sources. In collaboration with students at LMU Munich, participants will conduct research for presentations and seminar papers and use their findings to create a joint, source-based teaching unit that integrates Jewish history into the broader history of medieval Europe.
