Short Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the role of international law in dispute resolution, using the Arab-Israeli conflict as reference. This conflict is the perfect prism with which to assess international law ? as it has successes (peace agreements), failures (armed conflict), and everything in between (armistice agreements, interim negotiations, and more). The course will provide theoretical background on the basic rules and principles of different areas of international law and will explore the role of such rules as they have played out in the Arab-Israeli conflict. At the conclusion of this course, students should have an overview understanding of primary topics of international law (what are the sources of international law; who are the recognized actors international law; what are the main substantive fields of international law etc.), different dispute resolution mechanisms incorporating international law and an overview of the international legal aspects of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
