Short Course Description

The course will introduce students to the concepts of sustainability and to how environmental considerations can be integrated into development policies and projects. It will review the evolution of global policy from concern for environmental pollution to promoting sustainable development goals. Students will gain an understanding of decision making mechanisms in central and local government, with a particular emphasis on spatial planning and environmental impact assessment. The course will take a problem solving approach, combining insights from a range of social and natural sciences, to consider how to build sustainable cities and how to protect natural resources for this and future generations. The course will introduce the student to environmental and social considerations in a wide range of economic development issues, such as: residential and commercial property development, energy generation and transmission, extraction of raw materials, tourism and transportation. It will enable the student to gain insights into how conflicts arise between developmental and environmental interests and how they can be resolved. This year's course will consider the implications of Covid 19 for sustainability policy.
